Get Started: Info For Researchers
The CPE is in the unique position of being able to match social science researchers with police departments in the United States and around the globe. Our goal is to match researcher needs and interests with the goals of partner law enforcement agencies to produce a better science of justice in policing. Our staff are trained to facilitate these kinds of research collaborations, and we welcome researchers interested in taking advantage of our network of partner agencies and scholars. Keep in mind, that the CPE requires all researchers to abide by our MoU’s and the spirit of our collaborations—meaning that our research must be done with an eye towards providing police departments with new and actionable insights into their justice goals.
Additionally, the CPE regularly solicits small grant proposals in order to facilitate innovative research on policing and social justice. Solicitations are posted on the home page and on this page, so check back regularly!

To give you a more specific idea of how a collaboration with the CPE might look, below is an outline of the general steps that are often involved in working with the CPE.

STEP 2 Sign an agreement. Agreements vary by location. A sample agreement is available upon request.
STEP 3 Training. If you have not worked with police before, we recommend that you attend a training session aimed at effective researcher/police collaboration. The CPE “Bootcamp” for researchers has two modules: a general training and a department specific training. For more information, please contact Executive Director Meredith Gamson Smiedt.
STEP 4 Site visit. After training, you may also be asked to go on a site visit, either accompanied by CPE staff or independently. For more information about site visits, click here.
STEP 5 Research. You will be asked to coordinate with other researchers at the same site regarding data collections and to communicate regularly with CPE staff regarding your progress. You will also be required to submit a report to us and the department periodically; that report is then embargoed for a specified period of time (typically 30 days) to allow the department to process the report.
